90-Day Chess Improvement Guide
Our 0-to-2400 blueprint and 1000-to-2000 roadmap provide long-term frameworks. This guide provides a specific 90-day plan, with daily activities, weekly milestones, and measurable targets, designed for club players (1200-1800) who want tangible improvement.
Month 1: Tactical foundation (Days 1–30)
Daily (30 minutes): 15 minutes puzzle solving (focus on accuracy, not speed), 15 minutes playing one slow game (15+10). Weekly: Review all games from the week with engine analysis. Identify one recurring mistake and make it your focus for the next week.
Milestone: By day 30, you should be solving intermediate puzzles at 70%+ accuracy and consistently applying the pre-move blunder check.
Month 2: Strategic growth (Days 31–60)
Daily (45 minutes): 15 minutes puzzles (increase difficulty), 15 minutes playing one slow game, 15 minutes studying one concept from the pawn structures guide or endgame secrets. Weekly: Game review + one endgame study session (practice one key position until you can play it perfectly).
Milestone: By day 60, you should know the Lucena and Philidor positions cold and recognise the eight major pawn structures.
Month 3: Integration (Days 61–90)
Daily (60 minutes): 15 minutes puzzles, 15 minutes playing, 15 minutes opening study (build a repertoire), 15 minutes studying a master game. Weekly: Full game review + application of candidate-moves method in every game.
Milestone: By day 90, you should have a consistent thinking process, a basic opening repertoire, and measurably improved tactical accuracy. Expected rating gain: 100-200 points.
Tracking your progress
Track three metrics:
- Puzzle accuracy (your percentage on ChessBhumi puzzles).
- Game review quality (are you identifying your mistakes correctly?).
- Rating (play at least one rated game per week). Improvement is not always linear, expect plateaus. The plan works if you follow it consistently.
