Anastasia's Mate

Anastasia's Mate is a classic checkmate pattern: a rook and knight combine to mate a king trapped on the h-file (or a-file) by its own pawn. The knight controls the escape squares while the rook delivers the killing blow. Named after the novel Anastasia und das Schachspiel (1803).

The pattern

Typical setup: the king is on h8 (or h7) with a pawn on g7 blocking escape. The knight sits on e7 (or f5), controlling escape squares g8 and g6. The rook delivers mate on the h-file: Rh1#. The key: the pawn on g7 traps its own king, and the knight prevents the king from fleeing to g8 or g6.

How to set it up

Sacrifice to open the h-file (Bxh7+ or Nxf7 ideas). Get a knight to a controlling square near the king. Drive the rook to the h-file for the killing blow. This pattern often arises from kingside attacks in the Sicilian Defense (opening page) and other sharp openings.
