Arabian Mate

The Arabian Mate is one of the oldest checkmate patterns in chess, dating back to the Arabic precursor of the modern game. A rook and knight cooperate to mate the king in the corner: the knight covers the escape squares while the rook delivers checkmate on the edge file or rank.

The pattern

Typical position: king on h8, knight on f7, rook on h1 delivers Rh8#. The knight on f7 controls g8 and h8 is controlled by the rook. Alternatively: king in the corner, knight two squares away controlling the two escape squares, rook delivering mate along the edge.

Variations

The Arabian Mate can occur on any corner. Mirror patterns on a1, a8, h1 are equally common. The key ingredient is always the same: knight controls key escape squares, rook delivers mate on the edge. Look for this pattern in rook and knight endgames.

Solve Arabian Mate puzzles. Practise reaching this pattern from random positions against the computer.
