Blueprint to Reach 2000 Elo
2000 Elo, the threshold of "expert" level, is the goal of every serious improving player. Reaching it requires systematic training across all phases of the game. This blueprint provides a structured, step-by-step plan based on the methods used by thousands of players who've reached this milestone.
Phase 1: Foundation (under 1400)
- Duration: 3-6 months.
- Focus: Tactical fundamentals, basic endgames, opening principles.
- Daily training: 30 minutes of puzzles, 15 minutes of endgame study (Lucena, Philidor, opposition).
- Play: 2-3 slow games per week (15+10 or longer).
- Key skills: See all basic tactical patterns, avoid one-move blunders, know basic checkmates.
Phase 2: Development (1400-1700)
- Duration: 6-12 months.
- Focus: Deeper tactics, pawn structures, basic positional play.
- Daily training: 30 minutes of puzzles, 15 minutes of study (rotating: openings, middlegame, endgame).
- Play: 3-4 slow games per week.

Phase 3: Refinement (1700-2000)

Common mistakes to avoid
- Too much opening study, too little tactics. At every level below 2000, tactics decide more games than openings.
- Playing too fast. Blitz doesn't improve your chess, slow games do.
- Not analyzing games. Without analysis, you repeat the same mistakes.
- Studying randomly. Follow a structured plan (like this one), not random YouTube videos.
- Comparing yourself to others. Focus on your own progress. See Improvement Checklist and Science of Improvement.
