Can AI Create Better Chess Than Humans?

Since Kasparov's loss to Deep Blue in 1997, chess engines have only gotten stronger. Today, Stockfish and Leela Chess Zero play at a level that makes even World Champions look like club players. The question is no longer "Can AI beat humans?" (it can, easily) but "Has AI made human chess obsolete?" The answer is more nuanced than you might expect.

What AI does better

  • Calculation: Engines calculate millions of positions per second. No human can match this.
  • Consistency: Engines never blunder (within their search depth), never get tired, never go on tilt.
  • Endgame precision: With tablebases, engines play perfect chess in all positions with 7 or fewer pieces.
  • Opening preparation: Engines find novelties that no human has ever considered.

What AI doesn't do

  • Understanding: Engines don't "understand" chess, they evaluate positions through numerical functions. A human who understands a pawn structure can explain why it's weak; an engine just assigns a number.
  • Creativity: Engines don't create, they optimise. AlphaZero's games feel creative because they violate human conventions, but AlphaZero is simply finding objectively good moves that humans filter out.
  • Teaching: An engine can show you the best move; it cannot explain why it's the best move in a way that helps you learn.

Has AI made human chess obsolete?

No, for three reasons.

  1. Human chess is a sport. The appeal of chess is not "finding the objectively best move" but watching humans compete under pressure. AI makes human chess more interesting, not less, because it reveals the moments where human genius (or human error) shapes the outcome.
  2. AI has enriched chess. Modern engines have expanded the range of acceptable chess, inspiring creativity at the top level.
  3. The experience of playing chess is irreplaceable. No AI can replicate the feeling of finding a brilliant move in your own game.

The future

AI will continue to get stronger. Human chess will continue to thrive. The two coexist, engines as training tools and analytical partners, humans as competitors and creators. The best use of AI for your chess: game analysis to identify mistakes, engine-assisted opening preparation, and using engine evaluations to calibrate your own positional judgment.
