Calculation Training: The GM Secret
Building on our Complete Art of Calculation, this article focuses specifically on training methods, the exercises that Grandmasters and their coaches use to build calculation depth and accuracy. These methods are not secrets in the traditional sense; they are simply not widely known outside professional chess circles.
Method 1: The "write it down" exercise
Before solving a puzzle, write down your complete calculation, all candidate moves, all variations, all evaluations, before checking the answer. This forces you to complete the calculation instead of stopping prematurely with "it looks good." Track the depth of your correct calculations over time.
Target: 3-move depth at 1200, 4-move depth at 1600, 5+ move depth at 2000.
Method 2: Blindfold puzzles
Read a position in algebraic notation (e.g., "White: Kg1, Qd1, Rf1, Ra1, Bc1, Nb1, pawns a2, b2, c2, f2, g2, h2..."). Without setting up the board, solve the puzzle in your head. This builds visualisation ability, the mechanical skill that enables calculation. Start with simple 2-move puzzles and gradually increase difficulty.
Method 3: The "opponent's best move" drill
Take a position from a master game. Find the best move. Now: what is the opponent's best reply? What do you play after that? What is the opponent's best reply to that? Continue until you reach a quiet position. This trains the discipline of always considering the opponent's strongest response, the habit that prevents most calculation errors.
Method 4: Post-game comparison
After each game, compare your in-game calculations with the engine's analysis. Where did your calculation diverge from the engine? Did you miss a candidate move? Did you misevaluate a resulting position? Each divergence is a training target. Use game review to do this systematically.
The training schedule
- Daily: 15 minutes of puzzle solving (write-it-down method).
- Weekly: 2-3 blindfold puzzles.
- After each game: Post-game calculation comparison. Within three months of consistent practice, your calculation depth will improve by 1-2 moves, worth approximately 100-200 rating points.
