Chess Engine vs. Human: How Big Is the Gap?

Since Kasparov's loss to Deep Blue in 1997, computers have surpassed humans by an ever-widening margin. Today's best engine (Stockfish) is estimated at approximately 3600 Elo, while the best human (Magnus Carlsen) peaked at 2882. That ~700-point gap represents a crushing advantage.

The rating gap explained

A 700-point rating difference means the engine would be expected to score approximately 99.8% against the world's best player. In practical terms, a top engine would win every game against any human. The gap has only widened since Deep Blue.

What engines see differently

Engines don't "understand" chess like humans. They evaluate millions of positions per second using brute-force search. But the result is extraordinary accuracy: top engines make fewer than 1 inaccuracy per 100 moves. Humans, even the best, make several per game.
