Chess Vision Training: 40 Exercises

Chess vision, the ability to spot tactical patterns, threats, and opportunities at a glance, is the most practical skill in chess. It's what makes you "see" the fork before your opponent does. Building on our Visualization Training guide, here are 40 specific exercises to improve your chess vision.

Pattern recognition drills (1–10)

  • 1. Flash puzzles: View a tactical puzzle for 5 seconds, then hide it. Solve from memory. Start with mate-in-1; progress to mate-in-2.
  • 2-5. Motif recognition: Set up positions containing specific motifs (forks, pins, skewers, back-rank threats) and practice identifying them instantly.
  • 6-10. Random position scanning: Given any random position, identify all checks, captures, and threats for both sides within 10 seconds.

Board awareness drills (11–20)

  • 11. Undefended piece scan: In any position, identify every undefended piece, both yours and the opponent's.
  • 12. Alignment detection: Find every rank, file, and diagonal that has two or more pieces of the same colour on it.
  • 13-15. King safety audit: Assess the king's safety in any position by counting escape squares, pawn cover integrity, and proximity of attacking pieces.
  • 16-20. Piece mobility scoring: For each piece, count its legal moves. The piece with the fewest moves is your worst piece, practice finding the move that activates it.

Speed calculation drills (21–30)

  • 21-25. Timed puzzle sets: Solve 10 puzzles in 10 minutes. Track accuracy. Repeat weekly and compare scores. Use ChessBhumi puzzles.
  • 26-28. Two-move calculation: From any position, calculate every possible 2-move sequence (your move + opponent's best reply).
  • 29-30. Blitz CCT scan: Practice the checks-captures-threats scan in blitz games, do it after every opponent move, even in time trouble.

Advanced exercises (31–40)

  • 31-33. Blindfold knight paths: Without a board, trace the shortest knight path between two named squares (see visualization training).
  • 34-36. Position reconstruction: Study a position for 30 seconds, then set it up from memory.
  • 37-38. Calculation chains: In tactical positions, calculate the longest forcing sequence you can visualise clearly, then check with the engine.
  • 39-40. Real-time annotation: During a game, mentally annotate each position before moving ("my bishop is pinned to the king; the e5 square is weak; I have a potential knight fork on c6").
