Discovered Attacks in Chess
A discovered attack is one of the most powerful tactical weapons: you move one piece, revealing an attack from a second piece behind it. The moving piece can create its own threat, giving you two attacks in a single move. Discovered attacks are the basis for some of the most brilliant combinations in chess history.
How they work
Three elements:
- A piece that will move (the "blocker").
- A piece behind it that will be "discovered" (the "attacker").
- A target for the discovered piece. When the blocker moves, it reveals the attacker, and the blocker can create its own threat simultaneously.
Discovered attacks vs checks
A regular discovered attack threatens a piece. A discovered check threatens the king, which is far more powerful because the check must be addressed, leaving the blocking piece free to do anything: capture a queen, deliver mate, or create further threats.
Training
Solve discovered attack puzzles. Key pattern: look for pieces that are "blocked" by friendly pieces on the same line, rank, or diagonal.
