Deep Blue to Stockfish
1997: Deep Blue defeats Kasparov, a watershed moment. But early engines played "inhumanly", pure calculation without understanding. Modern Stockfish (3500+ Elo) combines massive calculation with sophisticated evaluation. It sees 300+ million positions per second.
AlphaZero revolution
2017: AlphaZero teaches itself chess in 4 hours and defeats Stockfish. Its style, dynamic, sacrificial, positional, inspired a generation of human players. It proved that the initiative and activity are more valuable than material.
How to use engines wisely
- Analyse games FIRST without the engine, then check.
- Don't just look at the top move, understand WHY it's best.
- Use engines for opening preparation, not for playing.
- Study why engines play "weird" moves, you'll learn new concepts.
