How to Reach 1000 Elo
Reaching 1000 Elo is the first major milestone in chess. It means you understand the basics: you don't hang pieces often, you develop your pieces, and you can spot simple tactics. Here's the exact plan to get there.
Step 1: Stop hanging pieces
The single most impactful change: before every move, check if your piece is safe. Ask: "Can my opponent capture this piece?" If yes, either defend it or move it somewhere safe. This alone will gain you 100+ rating points.
Step 2: Learn basic tactics
Solve 10 easy puzzles daily. Focus on one-move tactics: forks, pins, back rank mates. Don't worry about difficulty, consistency matters more.
Step 3: Basic opening principles
- Control the centre (e4/d4).
- Develop knights and bishops first.
- Castle within the first 10 moves.
- Don't move the same piece twice.
- Don't bring the queen out too early. Study one opening for White and one for Black, the London System (opening page) is a great start.
