Online Chess vs. Over-the-Board Chess
Should you play online, over-the-board, or both? The two formats have significant differences in pacing, psychology, and skill development. Here is how they compare.
Rating differences
Online ratings are typically 200-400 points higher than FIDE OTB ratings. A 1600 FIDE player might be 1800-2000 on Chess.com. This is due to rating inflation in online pools, faster time controls, and different player pools. See FIDE ratings explained.
Skills developed
Online: faster pattern recognition, time management under pressure, opening repertoire testing. OTB: deep calculation, psychological resilience, dealing with nerves, reading opponents' body language, managing a physical scoresheet and clock.
Which improves you more?
OTB classical chess is generally better for improvement because it forces deep thinking. However, online rapid (15+10) is an excellent substitute when OTB play is unavailable. The ideal is both: daily online rapid games for practice, monthly OTB tournaments for serious improvement.
