Overthinking in Chess

Spending 10 minutes on a move doesn't make it 10x better. In fact, overthinking often makes you play worse, you second-guess yourself, burn clock time, and eventually make a decision from fatigue rather than clarity. The solution isn't thinking less, it's thinking better.

Why overthinking fails

  1. First instincts are often right, your subconscious pattern recognition is powerful.
  2. Deep thinking has diminishing returns, after 2-3 minutes, you rarely find better moves.
  3. Time is a resource, spending 10 minutes on move 15 means time trouble on move 35.

Think better, not longer

  1. Use a structured candidate moves process.
  2. Set a time budget: spend long only on critical moments.
  3. Trust your preparation, if you've studied the position, trust what you know.
  4. Make a decision and commit, don't second-guess after choosing a move.
