Queen Endgames
Queen endgames are the most tactical and chaotic of all endgame types. The queen's power, able to attack any square, deliver perpetual checks, and support passed pawns from afar, makes these endgames extremely complex and demanding. Precision is everything.
Key principles
- Centralise the queen. A centralised queen controls maximum squares.
- King safety matters. The queen can deliver perpetual check, keep your king safe.
- Create passed pawns. A queen supporting a passed pawn is one of the strongest forces in chess.
- Avoid trading queens. If the resulting pawn endgame is not clearly winning, avoid the queen trade, queen endgames have more winning potential.
Perpetual check
The defender's primary resource: perpetual check. When behind in material, look for a sequence of checks that forces a draw by repetition. The attacking side must advance their king to a safe square before trying to win. This defensive technique saves countless "lost" queen endgames.
Queen + pawn vs queen
This is the fundamental queen endgame position. Generally: a centre or bishop pawn on the seventh rank draws because the defending queen can deliver perpetual check. A rook pawn or knight pawn on the seventh can sometimes win because the king can shelter from checks. Learn the key positions, they appear in practice regularly.
Practice
Queen endgames are best learned through practice rather than memorisation. Play queen endgames against the engine on the analysis board. Focus on: finding perpetual check when defending, and protecting the king when winning with an extra pawn. See also: 50 Endgame Rules.
