Queen vs Pawn Endgames
Queen vs pawn seems like an easy win, but when the pawn reaches the 7th rank, supported by its king, the queen must use a precise technique. And with a bishop-pawn or rook-pawn, the position can even be a draw. These are must-know positions.
The winning method
Queen vs centre or knight pawn on the 7th:
- Use the queen to deliver checks, driving the opponent's king in front of the pawn.
- March your own king closer during the check sequence.
- Repeat until your king is close enough to support the queen in winning the pawn. This "staircase" technique is essential knowledge.
The critical exceptions
Bishop-pawn (c or f): When the pawn reaches c2/f2 (or c7/f7), the defending king can hide in the corner, creating a stalemate defence. The queen must avoid giving stalemate. Rook-pawn (a or h): The rook-pawn on the 7th rank is the hardest case, the corner provides natural stalemate shelter, and the position is often a draw.
