Queen vs Rook Endgames
Queen vs rook is theoretically a win for the queen side, but it's one of the most difficult endgames to win in practice. Even grandmasters struggle. The rook can set up defensive constructions, perpetual rook checks, and fortress positions that make the win incredibly difficult.
Winning with the queen
The standard winning method:
- Centralise your king, the queen can't win alone.
- Push the opponent's king to the edge.
- Force the rook to separate from the king.
- Win the rook with a fork or skewer. This process can take 30-50 moves of precise play.
Defending with the rook
Defensive strategies:
- Keep the rook near the king, a rook adjacent to its king is hard to fork.
- Look for fortress setups, certain rook positions are impregnable.
- Stalemate tricks, in desperate positions, look for stalemate resources.
- The "Philidor defence" in Q vs R: place the rook on the third rank, creating a barrier.
