Rook vs Bishop Endgames
Rook vs bishop with pawns is one of the most common practical endgames, and one of the most misunderstood. The rook is stronger, but the bishop can often construct fortress positions that hold the draw. Understanding the boundary between winning and drawing is essential.
When the rook wins
The rook wins when:
- Pawns are on both sides, the bishop can't defend both flanks.
- The bishop is passive, blocked by its own pawns.
- The rook can create a passed pawn on the opposite side.
- The defending king is cut off from the action.
When it draws
The bishop draws when:
- All pawns are on one side.
- The bishop has a good diagonal, covering key squares.
- A fortress is possible.
- The bishop can sacrifice for the last pawn.
