Rook vs Knight Endgames
Rook vs knight is generally favourable for the rook, the rook's long range gives it control of both flanks. But the knight has a critical advantage: it can blockade passed pawns while attacking other pawns simultaneously. Understanding the balance is key.
Rook advantages
The rook dominates when: pawns are on both sides, the knight has no outpost, and passed pawns are far advanced. The rook can cut off the king, attack pawns from distance, and create threats on multiple flanks.
Knight defences
The knight defends well when: the position is closed, the knight has a central blockade, and pawns are on one side. A knight on a blockade square (in front of a passed pawn) is almost as valuable as a rook.
