What does science actually say about improving at chess? Research from cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and expert performance studies reveals that improvement comes from deliberate practice, not just playing more games. This guide separates evidence-based methods from myths.

Deliberate practice

Anders Ericsson's research on expertise shows that deliberate practice, focused, structured study with feedback, is the key driver of improvement. Simply playing games is NOT deliberate practice. What counts: solving tactical puzzles at the edge of your ability, studying master games with deep analysis, and reviewing your own games critically.

Pattern recognition

Studies show grandmasters store ~100,000 chess patterns in long-term memory. They don't calculate faster, they recognise patterns faster. Building your pattern library through puzzle-solving and game study is the fastest path to improvement.

What doesn't work

  1. Playing blitz exclusively, no time for reflection.
  2. Memorising opening theory beyond your level.
  3. Watching videos passively.
  4. Studying only what you enjoy instead of what you need. Focus on your weaknesses, not your strengths.
