Shouldering in King and Pawn Endgames
Shouldering is one of the most practical K+P endgame techniques: you use your king to physically block the opponent's king from reaching a critical square, like a basketball player setting a screen. It's simple, effective, and wins games at every level.
How shouldering works
Instead of moving directly towards the promotion square, the king takes a diagonal path that forces the opponent's king to take a longer route. Your king "shoulders" the opponent's king aside, gaining critical tempos. The king acts as a physical barrier on the board.
When to use it
Shouldering is most effective in king vs king races, when both kings are heading towards the same area. By shouldering, you can reach a key square one or two moves before the opponent, which often decides the game.
