The Slav Defense
The Slav Defense (1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6) is one of the most reliable defences against 1.d4. Unlike the Queen's Gambit Declined, the Slav keeps the c8-bishop's diagonal open, solving one of Black's biggest strategic problems.
The basic moves
1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6. Black supports d5 with the c-pawn rather than the e-pawn. This keeps the bishop's diagonal (c8-h3) open. After 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3, Black typically plays 4...dxc4 (accepting the gambit) or 4...e6 (the Semi-Slav).
Key ideas for Black
Develop the light-squared bishop before playing ...e6. After ...dxc4, recapture is not urgent, Black can play ...b5 to hold the extra pawn temporarily. The typical pawn structure gives Black a solid, flexible position with few weaknesses.
Main variations
Exchange Variation (3.cxd5 cxd5): symmetrical, equal, slightly dull. Main Line (3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 dxc4): the sharpest, Black grabs the pawn. Semi-Slav (4...e6): the most complex, leading to the Meran and Anti-Meran systems.
Who plays it
