Think Like a Grandmaster Every Move

The difference between a Grandmaster and a club player is not the depth of calculation, it is the process. GMs follow a consistent decision-making framework on every move. Club players improvise. Here is a concrete, repeatable process you can apply immediately. It takes practice to make automatic, but even imperfect application will improve your play.

Step 1: What did my opponent just do?

Before thinking about your own move, understand your opponent's last move. What does it threaten? What did it improve? What weakness did it create? This takes 5–10 seconds and prevents the #1 cause of blunders: ignoring the opponent's plans.

Step 2: Is the position tactical or strategic?

Are there immediate checks, captures, or threats? If yes, calculate concretely using the candidate-moves method. If no, assess the position strategically using the five-factor assessment (material, kings, pawns, pieces, tactics).

Step 3: Choose a plan or calculate a variation

In a strategic position, identify a plan: improve your worst piece, target a weakness, prepare a pawn break. In a tactical position, identify 3–5 candidate moves and calculate each one 3–5 moves deep.

Step 4: Select a move

Choose the move that best serves your plan (strategic) or produces the best resulting position (tactical). If two moves are roughly equal, choose the one that poses the most practical problems for your opponent.

Step 5: Blunder check

Before playing your selected move, check: does it hang a piece? Does it allow a check or capture? Does it create a back-rank or fork vulnerability? This takes 2–3 seconds and prevents the majority of game-losing blunders.

Making it automatic

This process feels slow at first, 5 steps for every move. With practice (20–30 slow games), it becomes automatic: the steps compress into a single "scan" that takes a few seconds in routine positions and expands to deep analysis in critical ones. Use post-game review to check whether you followed the process, and where you deviated.
