Two Bishops vs Knight Endgames
The bishop pair is powerful in the middlegame, but in the endgame, it can be absolutely decisive. Two bishops covering both colours create a web of control that a knight + bishop simply cannot match. This guide explains the winning methods.
Why two bishops dominate
The bishop pair dominates endgames because:
- They cover every square, one bishop covers light squares, the other dark squares. A knight can only cover one colour at a time.
- They work at long range, two bishops can control both flanks simultaneously.
- They create zugzwang, the bishops can triangulate to force the opponent into bad positions.
Winning techniques
Coordinate the bishops on adjacent diagonals, restricting the knight and king. Create passed pawns on both sides, the bishops support them from distance. Force the knight to choose between defending a pawn and blocking a passed pawn. If possible, trade one bishop for the knight, leaving bishop vs nothing.
