Chess Tournament Preparation

Tournament chess is a different animal from casual play. Preparation, opening repertoire, physical fitness, mental readiness, and practical habits, can add 100+ rating points to your tournament performance.

Before the tournament

  1. Opening prep: Review your repertoire, focus on critical lines, not new experiments.
  2. Physical: Sleep 8 hours the week before. Exercise daily, chess is mentally exhausting.
  3. Tactical sharpness: Solve puzzles daily in the week before.
  4. Pack: Board, clock, notation pad, water, snacks.

During the tournament

  1. Warm up with 10-15 puzzles before each round.
  2. Check your opponent's games in the database, look for pet openings and weaknesses.
  3. Use time management discipline.
  4. Between rounds: rest, eat, hydrate, don't analyse your game obsessively.
  5. If you lose, use the recovery techniques.
