Back-Rank Mate

Checkmate on the first or eighth rank, trapped by your own pawns.

A back-rank mate happens when a king castled behind its own unmoved pawns is checkmated by a rook or queen along the back rank, with no escape square available. See the back-rank mate pattern page.
