Scotch Game

An open, direct challenge to the centre with an early d4.

The Scotch Game (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4) opens the centre immediately, trading a pawn for quick piece activity and open lines — revived at the top level by Garry Kasparov in the 1990s.
