75 Essential Tactical Patterns
This is the middle ground between our checkmate pattern guide (beginner) and our 100 patterns list (comprehensive reference). These 75 patterns are the ones that actually decide tournament games at club level, the patterns you'll encounter most frequently.
Core patterns (1–25)
- Fork patterns (1-8): Knight fork, queen fork, pawn fork, bishop fork, rook fork, discovered fork, double check fork, king-and-rook fork.
- Pin patterns (9-15): Absolute pin (to king), relative pin (to queen), cross-pin, pin and pile-up, pin-breaking, pin exploitation, discovered attack from pin.
- Skewer patterns (16-20): Queen skewer, rook skewer, bishop skewer, X-ray attack, skewer with check.
- Discovered attacks (21-25): Discovered check, double check, discovered attack on queen, windmill, discovered defence.
Mating patterns (26–50)
- Back-rank mates (26-30): Classic back-rank, back-rank with sacrifice, deflection to back rank, back-rank with rook lift, Opera mate.
- King hunts (31-35): Greek gift (Bxh7+), kingside storm, piece sacrifice on g7/h7, king march to centre, driving king to open file.
- Smothered and special mates (36-40): Smothered mate, Arabian mate, Anastasia's mate, Boden's mate, hook mate.
- Queen sacrifice mates (41-45): Qxh7# sacrifice, Qxg2# sacrifice, queen decoy sacrifice, queen deflection sacrifice, queen clearance sacrifice.
- Endgame mates (46-50): K+Q vs K, K+R vs K, two-bishop mate, bishop-and-knight mate, lawnmower mate.
Advanced patterns (51–75)
- Deflection and decoy (51-55): Deflecting the guard, decoying the king, decoying a piece to a forkable square, deflection sacrifice, overloaded defender exploitation.
- Zwischenzug and tempo (56-60): In-between check, in-between capture, in-between threat, tempo gain by attack, desperado (capturing with a lost piece).
- Combinations (61-65): Sacrifice + fork combination, pin + discovered attack, attraction + mate, clearance + promotion, multiple sacrifice combination.
- Positional tactics (66-70): Trapped piece, interference, blocking, undermining the defender, X-ray defence.
- Endgame tactics (71-75): Pawn breakthrough, stalemate tricks, promotion tactics, zugzwang creation, rook endgame tactics.
Training plan
Study 5 patterns per day for 15 days. After completing all 75, start solving puzzles with the explicit goal of identifying which pattern each puzzle uses. This "label the pattern" approach dramatically accelerates recognition speed.
