Smothered Mate
A smothered mate is delivered by a knight when the enemy king is hemmed in — "smothered" — by its own pieces and has no square to flee to. It is one of the most beautiful finishes in chess.
The knight on f7 gives checkmate: the king on h8 is smothered by its own rook and pawns.
How it works
The knight is the only piece that can check a king without giving it the chance to capture or block from a distance. When every square around the king is occupied by its own men, a single knight check ends the game.
The classic setup (Philidor's Legacy)
The famous sequence sacrifices a queen to force the king into the corner: the queen checks, a rook is forced to block, and the knight delivers Nf7#. Recognising the pattern lets you spot the queen sacrifice that sets it up.
