Alekhine Defense: Complete Guide
The Alekhine Defense (1.e4 Nf6) is the ultimate provocateur opening. Black's knight invites White's e-pawn to advance: 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4, and now White has a massive centre. But that centre is also a target. The Alekhine's strategy: provoke White into overextension, then destroy the overextended pawns.
What is the Alekhine Defense?
Named after world champion Alexander Alekhine, this opening is a pure hypermodern concept: let the opponent build a big centre, then attack it. After 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5, White has a space advantage but Black's knight is actively placed and the e5 pawn can become a target.
The Alekhine is controversial, some consider it dubious, others consider it underrated. At the club level, it's an excellent surprise weapon because most 1.e4 players are unprepared for it.
Main variations
Four Pawns Attack (3.d4 d6 4.c4 Nb6 5.f4): White builds the maximum centre, c4, d4, e5, f4. Impressive, but overextended. Black attacks with ...dxe5, ...Bf5, and ...e6, undermining the chain.
Exchange Variation (3.d4 d6 4.c4 Nb6 5.exd6): White trades the e5 pawn, leading to a more balanced position. Less sharp than the Four Pawns but more solid.
Modern Variation (3.d4 d6 4.Nf3): White develops naturally without overcommitting pawns. After 4...Bg4 or 4...g6, the positions are flexible and strategic.
Strategic themes
- Provoking overextension: Every Alekhine player must understand this concept, White's pawns advance, creating targets.
- The ...d6 break: Attacking e5 with ...d6 is Black's primary weapon. After exd6, the centre opens and Black's pieces become active.
- Piece activity vs space: White has space, Black has piece activity. This is the fundamental Alekhine trade-off.
