Best Chess Engines for Analysis
A good chess engine is the most powerful training tool available. But not all engines are equal, and using them effectively requires knowing which engine to choose and how to interpret its output.
Stockfish
Stockfish is the strongest free engine in the world, rated approximately 3600 Elo. It is open-source, runs on any hardware, and powers the analysis on Lichess. For most players, Stockfish is the only engine you need. Download it from stockfishchess.org. See engine vs human gap.
Leela Chess Zero (Lc0)
Leela is a neural network engine inspired by AlphaZero. It plays in a more "human" style than Stockfish, with a focus on positional understanding and long-term plans. Leela requires a GPU to run effectively. It is excellent for understanding strategic positions where Stockfish's evaluation might be harder to interpret.
Browser-based analysis
You do not need to install anything. Lichess offers free, unlimited Stockfish analysis in your browser. Chess.com offers analysis with a premium subscription. Both allow you to paste games and get instant engine evaluation.
How to use engines effectively
Don't just check the evaluation. Ask why the engine prefers a move. Look at the top 3-4 candidate moves, not just the first. Focus on positions where your move differs from the engine's recommendation. See our engine usage guide.
