Fool's Mate: The Fastest Checkmate
Fool's Mate is the shortest possible chess game: checkmate in just two moves. It is called "Fool's Mate" because only extremely weak moves make it possible.
The moves
The fastest possible checkmate: 1.f3 e5 2.g4 Qh4#. White makes two terrible moves (weakening the kingside with f3 and g4), and Black's queen delivers checkmate on h4. The diagonal to the king is wide open and nothing can block or escape.
Why it never happens
Fool's Mate requires White to play two of the worst possible moves. Even the most complete beginner rarely plays both f3 and g4 in sequence. You'll likely never see this in a real game, but the lesson it teaches is important.
The lesson
Fool's Mate demonstrates why king safety is paramount. The f2/f7 squares (in front of the king) are the weakest points at the start of the game because only the king defends them. Never weaken these squares without good reason. See our Scholar's Mate guide for another early-game trap targeting f7.
