Grünfeld Defense: Complete Guide

After 3...d5 (instead of the King's Indian's 3...Bg7), Black immediately strikes at White's centre. After 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4 Nxc3 6.bxc3, White has a powerful-looking pawn centre (c3+d4+e4), but Black's fianchettoed bishop on g7 and rapid piece development target that centre aggressively.

The Grünfeld's philosophy: White's centre is not a strength but a target. With ...c5, ...Bg7 pressure, and active pieces, Black attacks the centre and converts White's apparent advantage into a liability.

Exchange Variation (4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4 Nxc3 6.bxc3): The main line. White builds a massive centre; Black attacks it with ...c5, ...Bg7, ...Nc6, and ...Qa5. The resulting positions are sharply defined, White pushes, Black counterattacks.

Russian System (4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Qb3): White puts early pressure on d5, forcing Black to make a decision. More flexible than the Exchange but less forcing.

Fianchetto Variation (3.g3): White avoids the heavy theoretical lines entirely, opting for a quiet positional battle.

• Central counterplay: The ...c5 break is Black's primary weapon. It challenges d4 and, combined with the g7 bishop's pressure, can demolish White's centre.
• The g7 bishop: This piece is the engine of Black's counterplay. It targets d4, supports ...c5 and ...e5 breaks, and controls the long diagonal.
• Dynamic vs static: White has static central advantage (pawns on d4+e4); Black has dynamic counterplay (piece activity, open lines). The battle between these two types of advantages is the heart of the Grünfeld.
