Method 1: Pattern-first evaluation
Carlsen doesn't calculate from scratch in most positions, he recognises the position type first, recalls the typical plans and ideas, and then calculates only the specific variations that deviate from the pattern. This dramatically reduces the calculation workload. Build your pattern library through deliberate study and puzzle training.
Method 2: Endgame telescope
Carlsen evaluates middlegame positions by "telescoping" to the endgame: what endgame will this position become? Is that endgame winning, drawing, or losing? This reverse-engineering approach produces moves that seem impossible in the middlegame but are objectively best because they lead to a favourable endgame. Method 3: Forcing-move ladders
