Perpetual Check in Chess
Perpetual check is the great equaliser: even when you're down massive material, delivering an endless series of checks forces a draw. The opponent's king can never escape the checking sequence, the position repeats three times, triggering a draw by repetition. It's the most important defensive tactic in chess.
How perpetual check works
The queen (or sometimes a rook) delivers check after check. The king tries to escape, but the checking piece follows. After the same position appears three times, the game is drawn by threefold repetition. Key: the checking piece must have at least two checking squares to bounce between.
When to look for perpetual
- You're losing, significantly behind in material.
- The opponent's king is exposed.
- Queen endgames, perpetual check is always a resource.
- After a speculative sacrifice that didn't work, perpetual check is the safety net.
Training
Solve defensive puzzles where the answer is perpetual check. In your games, always check for perpetual before resigning.
