The Psychology Behind Your Blunders

Building on our earlier Psychology of Blundering article, this companion piece goes deeper into the specific psychological mechanisms behind different types of blunders, and provides targeted fixes for each.

The five blunder types

Not all blunders are the same. Research on chess errors identifies five distinct types, each with a different psychological root cause:

  1. Oversight blunders: You literally didn't see the threat (attentional blindness).
  2. Calculation blunders: You calculated but made an error, forgot a piece, miscounted, or hallucinated a square.
  3. Impulsive blunders: You played too fast without thinking (often in time trouble or on tilt).
  4. Pattern-matching blunders: You recognised a familiar pattern and played the "template" move without verifying it fits.
  5. Fatigue blunders: Your cognitive resources are depleted and you simply can't think clearly anymore.

Targeted fixes for each type

Oversight → Pre-move scan. Before every move, check all checks, captures, and threats. This 3-second habit catches 90% of oversight blunders.

Calculation → Structured method. Use the candidate-moves method to organise your calculation. Verify captures are legal and pieces are where you think they are.

Impulsive → Sit on your hands. Physically pause before playing. In online chess, use the delay between seeing your move and clicking to perform one final blunder check.

Pattern-matching → Verify the template. When you recognise a pattern, spend five extra seconds confirming that all conditions are met in this specific position.

Fatigue → Structured breaks. After 90 minutes of play, take a 2-minute break (walk, stretch). Apply the stop-loss rule after consecutive losses.

Track your blunders

After each game, categorise your worst mistake into one of the five types. After 20 games, you'll see a clear pattern, most players have one or two dominant blunder types. Target your training at your specific weakness. Use game review to perform this analysis systematically.
