Exchange Sacrifice

Giving up a rook for a bishop or knight for positional gain.

An exchange sacrifice trades a rook for a minor piece (bishop or knight) — a small material loss — in return for a lasting positional edge such as a strong outpost, ruined enemy pawns, or a permanent attack.
