Sacrifice
Giving up material for a greater positional or attacking gain.
A sacrifice deliberately gives up material to obtain something more valuable: a mating attack, a passed pawn, the initiative, or a positional bind. A "sham" sacrifice regains the material soon; a "real" sacrifice is a longer-term investment.
