50 Chess Calculation Exercises

Calculation, the ability to see moves ahead accurately, is a trainable skill. Like a muscle, it strengthens with systematic exercise. These fifty exercises, arranged from beginner to advanced, target the specific calculation skills that matter most in practical play. Exercises 1–15: One-move and two-move tactics

These exercises train basic pattern recognition:

  • 1–5: Find the fork (knight forks, queen forks).
  • 6–10: Find the pin (absolute pins, relative pins).
  • 11–15: Find the skewer (bishop skewers, rook skewers). Each exercise requires seeing one or two moves ahead. The goal is instant recognition, if these take more than 30 seconds, review the tactical patterns guide first. Practice similar exercises on the puzzle trainer.

Exercises 16–30: Three-move combinations

These exercises require deeper calculation:

  • 16–20: Discovered attacks and double checks.
  • 21–25: Removal of the defender + follow-up.
  • 26–30: Back-rank combinations. Each exercise requires seeing three moves ahead and considering the opponent's best defence. The key skill: holding the position in your mind while exploring variations.

Exercises 31–42: Complex combinations

  • 31–35: Sacrificial combinations (sacrifice + follow-up + conversion).
  • 36–38: Quiet moves within tactical sequences, the hardest to find.
  • 39–42: Multiple forcing moves that must be calculated in the correct order. These exercises train the ability to see beyond the obvious and find the non-intuitive intermediate moves that make combinations work.

Exercises 43–50: Advanced calculation

43–46: Positions with multiple candidate moves where only precise calculation determines the correct choice. 47–50: Endgame calculations involving pawn races, opposition, and zugzwang. These are GM-level exercises that require 4-6 moves of accurate calculation. Don't rush, accuracy matters more than speed.
